Gas Leak Detection and Emergency Action
Gas leaks on construction sites can lead to explosions, fires, and asphyxiation. Natural gas is odourised to smell like rotten eggs, but other gases may be odourless. Rapid identification and correct emergency response are essential to prevent catastrophic harm to workers and the public nearby.
Key Hazards
Explosion or fire from ignition of leaking gas
Asphyxiation in enclosed areas where gas displaces oxygen
Delayed evacuation leading to mass casualty exposure
Ignition from sparks created by electrical equipment or tools
Control Measures
- Stop all work immediately if a gas leak is suspected and do not use any electrical equipment.
- Evacuate the area upwind and establish a cordon at least 50 metres from the suspected source.
- Call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 for natural gas leaks.
- Do not operate any switches, phones, or vehicles near the suspected leak area.
- Ensure gas detection equipment is available and calibrated on sites near gas infrastructure.
- Brief all operatives on gas emergency procedures during site induction.
- Report all suspected gas smells or hissing sounds to the site manager immediately.
- Ventilate enclosed spaces naturally by opening doors and windows if safe to do so.
- Account for all personnel at the assembly point and wait for the all-clear from emergency services.
Emergency / Rescue
Stop all work and eliminate ignition sources. Evacuate upwind and establish a 50-metre cordon. Call 0800 111 999 for natural gas leaks or 999 for other gases. Do not re-enter until emergency services confirm it is safe.

- Evacuate and establish a cordon of at least 50 metres from the source
