What?

  • Every construction site must operate under an environmental policy that sets out commitments to protect the environment.
  • The Environmental Protection Act 1990 creates a duty of care for waste management and pollution prevention.
  • Environmental policies cover pollution prevention, waste management, ecology, noise, dust, and carbon reduction.
  • The site environmental management plan (EMP) translates the policy into practical actions for every worker.
  • Environmental incidents such as spills, pollution, and ecological damage can result in unlimited fines.
  • The Environment Agency can issue enforcement notices, stop notices, and prosecute for environmental offences.
  • All workers are responsible for following the environmental rules on site, not just managers and supervisors.
  • Common environmental breaches include washing plant into drains, burning waste, and uncontrolled silt runoff.
  • Environmental awareness training should be included in every site induction before work begins.
  • Clients increasingly require ISO 14001 compliance and evidence of environmental performance from contractors.

Why?

Legal obligationEnvironmental legislation imposes strict duties — ignorance of the rules is not a defence in court.
Financial penaltiesEnvironmental prosecutions regularly result in six-figure fines and criminal records for individuals.
Protect natural habitatsConstruction borders rivers, wetlands, and green spaces — careless work destroys ecosystems permanently.
Client requirementPoor environmental performance leads to contract termination and exclusion from future tender lists.
Do Don't
  • Read and follow the site environmental management plan before starting work.
  • Attend the environmental briefing during your site induction.
  • Use designated waste skips and segregate materials correctly at all times.
  • Report any spill, pollution, or environmental damage to your supervisor immediately.
  • Keep all fuels, oils, and chemicals in bunded storage away from watercourses.
  • Maintain silt fencing, drain covers, and pollution prevention measures daily.
  • Dispose of waste through licensed carriers with correct waste transfer notes.
  • Respect ecological exclusion zones, tree protection, and habitat boundaries.
  • Switch off plant and vehicles when not in use to reduce emissions.
  • Raise environmental concerns through the site reporting system without delay.
  • DON'T pour any substance down drains, ditches, or onto open ground.
  • DON'T burn waste on site — it is a criminal offence under environmental law.
  • DON'T wash plant, tools, or concrete directly into any watercourse or drain.
  • DON'T remove or relocate environmental controls without supervisor approval.
  • DON'T mix hazardous and non-hazardous waste in the same skip or container.
  • DON'T leave engines idling unnecessarily — it wastes fuel and increases emissions.
  • DON'T ignore damaged silt fencing or uncovered drain protection on site.
  • DON'T fly-tip or dump waste anywhere other than designated licensed facilities.
  • DON'T assume someone else will clean up a spill — act on it immediately.
  • DON'T enter ecological exclusion zones marked on the site layout drawings.
