Fire Safety Awareness on Construction Sites

TBT-FIR-008

Construction sites present significant fire risks due to hot works, flammable materials, temporary electrical installations, and limited escape routes. Fires spread rapidly through partially completed buildings where fire-stopping has not yet been installed. Knowing the escape routes, assembly points, and how to raise the alarm could save your life and the lives of those around you.

Key Hazards
Rapid fire spread through combustible materials and incomplete fire barriers
Blocked or unclear escape routes in partially constructed buildings
Ignition sources from hot works, electrical faults, and smoking materials
LPG cylinders and flammable liquid stores creating explosion risks
Control Measures
  • Maintain clear escape routes and ensure all workers know the location of assembly points.
  • Keep work areas clean and free from combustible waste, packaging, and off-cuts at all times.
  • Store flammable liquids and LPG cylinders in designated, ventilated, and signed storage areas.
  • Ensure fire extinguishers are accessible, serviced, and appropriate for the types of fire risk present.
  • Follow the hot works permit system and maintain a fire watch for at least 60 minutes after completion.
  • Report any faulty electrical equipment, damaged cables, or overloaded circuits immediately.
  • Do not smoke anywhere on site except in designated smoking areas away from flammable materials.
  • Ensure temporary fire detection and alarm systems are operational throughout the construction phase.
  • Attend fire evacuation drills and know how to raise the alarm using the nearest call point.
Emergency / Rescue

If you discover a fire, raise the alarm immediately using the nearest call point. Do not attempt to fight the fire unless trained and it is safe to do so. Evacuate to the assembly point and report to the fire marshal.

Remember
  • Know your escape route and assembly point before you start work every single day.
  • Good housekeeping is the single most effective way to prevent fires on construction sites.
  • Never block fire escape routes with materials, plant, or waste under any circumstances.
  • Hot works cause the majority of construction site fires — always follow the permit system.
  • A small fire can become an uncontrollable blaze in less than three minutes.
  • If the alarm sounds, evacuate immediately and do not stop to collect personal belongings.
