CCTV Drainage Survey Safety
CCTV drainage surveys are used to inspect the internal condition of underground pipes before, during, and after construction. The work involves accessing manholes, deploying robotic cameras into live drainage systems, and working near open holes in roads and footpaths. Operatives face confined space, traffic, and biological hazards. This talk covers the safety requirements for CCTV drainage survey operations.
Key Hazards
Confined space atmosphere in manholes containing H2S or low oxygen
Biological infection from contact with sewage in live drainage systems
Pedestrians or vehicles falling into open manhole access points
Manual handling injuries from lifting heavy manhole covers and camera equipment
Control Measures
- Treat every manhole as a potential confined space and test the atmosphere before opening.
- Use manhole keys and correct lifting technique or a mechanical lifter for heavy covers.
- Erect barriers, signs, and guarding around all open manholes to protect pedestrians and traffic.
- Wear biological hazard PPE including gloves and eye protection when accessing live drainage.
- Ensure operatives have up-to-date hepatitis A and tetanus vaccinations.
- Deploy the CCTV camera from ground level wherever possible without entering the manhole.
- Install Chapter 8 traffic management before opening any manhole in the public highway.
- Wash hands thoroughly with antibacterial soap before eating, drinking, or leaving the work area.
- Brief the survey team on the confined space procedure and emergency response before starting.
