What?
- Chapter 8 of the Traffic Signs Manual sets the standards for temporary traffic management on UK roads and motorways.
- Chapter 8 Part 1 covers signing and guarding on roads other than motorways and dual carriageways.
- Chapter 8 Part 2 covers signing and guarding on motorways, dual carriageways, and other high-speed roads.
- Correct sign placement, spacing, and visibility are essential — drivers must be warned well in advance of the works.
- Cones must be the correct height for the road speed and spaced according to the taper and lateral safety zone requirements.
- A safety zone separates the traffic from the work area — its width depends on the speed limit and road type.
- All operatives installing Chapter 8 signing must hold the relevant sector scheme qualification for the road type.
- Signing layouts must be designed by a competent person and approved before installation on the public highway.
- Vehicle-mounted signs, arrow boards, and impact protection vehicles are required on high-speed roads.
- Regular checks of the signing layout during the shift are essential — displaced cones and damaged signs must be replaced immediately.
Why?
| Protect workers | Chapter 8 layouts create a physical safety zone between live traffic and the work area — correct installation saves lives. |
| Protect the public | Clear, well-positioned signs warn drivers in advance, reducing the risk of vehicles entering the work area at speed. |
| Legal compliance | The Safety at Street Works Code of Practice and Chapter 8 are legal standards — non-compliance leads to prosecution. |
