What?

  • RIDDOR stands for Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 2013.
  • Certain workplace injuries, diseases, and near misses must be reported to the HSE under RIDDOR.
  • Reportable injuries include fatalities, specified injuries such as fractures, and over-seven-day incapacitation.
  • Dangerous occurrences include scaffold collapse, crane overturns, and uncontrolled explosions, even with no injury.
  • The responsible person must report a RIDDOR incident online within 10 days, or immediately for fatalities.
  • The accident scene must be preserved and not disturbed until the investigation is complete or HSE authorises clearance.
  • Near miss reporting is equally important — near misses reveal hazards before someone is seriously hurt.
  • All incidents, no matter how minor, should be recorded in the site accident book for internal records.
  • A thorough investigation must be carried out to identify root causes and prevent the incident happening again.
  • Workers must report all injuries, near misses, and unsafe conditions to their supervisor immediately.

Why?

Legal obligationFailure to report a RIDDOR event is a criminal offence carrying unlimited fines and potential imprisonment.
Prevent recurrenceInvestigation identifies root causes — fixing the underlying problem prevents the same incident from happening again.
Learn and improveNear miss data reveals trends and patterns that help the site team eliminate hazards before someone is hurt.
Do Don't
  • Report all injuries, near misses, and dangerous occurrences to your supervisor immediately.
  • Record every incident in the site accident book, no matter how minor it appears.
  • Preserve the scene of any serious incident — do not move or disturb anything.
  • Cooperate fully with any incident investigation and provide an honest witness statement.
  • Seek first aid treatment for all injuries, even those that seem minor at the time.
  • Identify and report RIDDOR events to the HSE within the required timeframes.
  • Investigate all incidents using a structured method to identify root causes.
  • Share lessons learned from incidents with the wider team through safety alerts.
  • Follow up on investigation actions to ensure corrective measures are completed.
  • Encourage a culture where reporting near misses is valued and acted upon.
  • DON'T fail to report an injury, near miss, or dangerous occurrence to your supervisor.
  • DON'T ignore minor injuries — they must still be recorded in the accident book.
  • DON'T clean up or disturb the scene of a serious incident before investigation.
  • DON'T refuse to cooperate with an investigation or provide misleading information.
  • DON'T treat injuries yourself without reporting them and seeking first aid on site.
  • DON'T miss RIDDOR reporting deadlines — fatalities must be reported immediately.
  • DON'T skip the investigation step — understanding why prevents it happening again.
  • DON'T keep incident lessons to your team only — share them across the project.
  • DON'T close out investigations until all corrective actions are fully implemented.
  • DON'T discourage or punish workers for reporting near misses or unsafe conditions.
