Floor Tiling and Adhesive Safety
Floor tiling involves prolonged kneeling, manual handling of heavy tiles and bags of adhesive, and exposure to chemical products including cement-based compounds and epoxy grouts. Without proper controls, tilers can develop knee injuries, dermatitis, and respiratory problems from repeated exposure. This talk covers the hazards specific to floor tiling work and the precautions every operative must take.
Key Hazards
Knee injuries from prolonged kneeling on hard floor surfaces during tiling
Dermatitis and skin irritation from contact with cement-based adhesives
Respiratory problems from inhaling dust when cutting tiles or mixing grout
Back strain from manual handling heavy boxes of tiles and adhesive bags
Control Measures
- Use padded kneeling mats or knee pads designed for tiling to protect joints during prolonged kneeling.
- Wear alkali-resistant gloves when handling cement-based adhesive and grout to prevent dermatitis.
- Use wet cutting methods or on-tool extraction when cutting tiles to control dust at the source.
- Apply barrier cream to hands and forearms before starting work and wash thoroughly at every break.
- Assess the weight of tile boxes and adhesive bags and use trolleys or team lifts for heavy loads.
- Ensure adequate ventilation when using solvent-based or epoxy adhesives in enclosed rooms.
- Read the safety data sheet for every adhesive and grout product before using it on site.
- Rotate between tasks to reduce the duration of continuous kneeling during each working shift.
- Store adhesive and grout products in their original labelled containers away from heat sources.
