Wet Plastering and Rendering Safety
Wet plastering and external rendering involve mixing and applying cement-based materials overhead and at height. Plasterers face risks from cement burns, silica dust exposure, repetitive strain injuries, and working from access equipment for extended periods. This talk covers the key safety measures for wet plastering and rendering on UK construction sites.
- Wear waterproof gloves and long sleeves to prevent wet cement contact with skin at all times.
- Wash any cement splashes off skin immediately with clean water and apply barrier cream.
- Use pre-mixed or ready-to-use plaster products to reduce dust exposure during mixing.
- Provide dust extraction or RPE when dry mixing cementitious materials on site.
- Use appropriate access equipment such as podium steps or tower scaffolds, not makeshift platforms.
- Rotate plasterers between overhead and lower-level tasks to reduce repetitive strain exposure.
- Ensure adequate ventilation when applying gypsum plaster internally in enclosed spaces.
- Keep work areas clean and clear of wet plaster spillage to prevent slips and falls.
- Brief operatives on the COSHH assessment for each plaster product being used.
- Wear waterproof gloves and long sleeves to prevent cement contact with your skin
- Wash cement splashes off skin immediately with clean water, never use solvents
- Use pre-mixed products where possible to reduce dust during mixing operations
- Use proper access equipment such as podium steps, never makeshift platforms
- Rotate between overhead and lower tasks to reduce repetitive strain on shoulders and arms
