What?
- External lighting installation covers bollard lights, column lights, wall-mounted fittings, and feature lighting.
- Underground cable routes for external lighting cross footpaths, roads, and landscaped areas.
- Lighting columns are heavy and require crane or HIAB assistance for erection and positioning.
- Electrical connections must comply with BS 7671 including earthing for metallic columns and fittings.
- Excavation for cable ducts exposes workers to buried service risks and manual handling in trenches.
- Working at height is required for column-mounted and wall-mounted luminaire installation.
- External lighting circuits are often energised from distribution boards inside buildings at some distance.
- Isolation must be confirmed at the point of work, not just at the remote distribution board.
- Concrete foundations for lighting columns must cure to specified strength before the column is erected.
- Commissioning and lux level testing confirms the installation meets the design specification.
Why?
| Electrical safety | External lighting works in wet outdoor conditions with metallic fittings — earthing faults cause fatal electric shock. |
| Lifting hazards | Lighting columns weighing hundreds of kilograms require careful lifting to prevent crushing and dropping incidents. |
| Buried services | Cable ducting routes cross existing service corridors requiring detection and safe digging practices. |
