Lever Hoist and Chain Block Safety

TBT-LFT-035

Lever hoists and chain blocks are manual lifting devices used extensively for pulling, tensioning, and lifting loads in confined or restricted spaces where cranes cannot operate. Despite being hand-operated, they can lift several tonnes and cause serious crush injuries if misused. Correct selection, inspection, and operation are essential. This talk covers the safe use of lever hoists and chain blocks on UK construction sites.

Key Hazards
Crush injuries from dropping a load when the hoist is overloaded or defective
Chain failure from using a hoist beyond its safe working load rating
Fingers trapped between the chain and the load sheave during operation
Anchor point failure from attaching the hoist to an unsuitable support
Control Measures
  • Check the safe working load rating on the hoist and never exceed it.
  • Inspect the chain, hooks, and ratchet mechanism before every use.
  • Attach the hoist only to anchor points verified as adequate for the load.
  • Ensure the chain runs freely without kinks, twists, or fouling during operation.
  • Keep hands and fingers clear of the chain and load sheave at all times.
  • Use a tag line to control load swing and rotation during lifting operations.
  • Ensure the hoist has a valid LOLER thorough examination certificate within date.
  • Store hoists in a clean, dry location off the ground to prevent corrosion and damage.
  • Remove any hoist with visible defects, worn chain links, or illegible markings from service.
Remember
  • Never exceed the safe working load stamped on the hoist body
  • Inspect the chain, hooks, and ratchet mechanism before every single use
  • Attach only to anchor points that have been verified as adequate for the load
  • Keep hands and fingers well clear of the chain and load sheave during operation
  • Ensure the hoist has a valid LOLER thorough examination certificate before use
