What?
- LOLER 1998 applies to all lifting operations and lifting equipment used on construction sites.
- Every lifting operation must be properly planned, supervised, and carried out in a safe manner.
- A lift plan is required for every lift — verbal instructions alone are never sufficient.
- All lifting equipment must have a valid thorough examination certificate before use on site.
- The safe working load must never be exceeded — the weight of every load must be known before lifting.
- An appointed person is responsible for planning lifts, and a lift supervisor must oversee the operation.
- Exclusion zones must be set up beneath and around every lift to protect people from falling loads.
- Wind speed must be monitored — most cranes must cease work when wind exceeds set limits.
- Slingers and signallers must hold valid competency cards such as CPCS or NPORS.
- Dropped loads, overturned cranes, and crush injuries are among the most severe lifting incidents.
Why?
| Prevent crush injuries | Dropped or swinging loads can crush, trap, or kill workers — strict planning prevents these incidents. |
| Legal requirement | LOLER 1998 requires lift plans, thorough examinations, and competent personnel for every lifting operation. |
| Protect everyone on site | A failed lift can affect workers, the public, and nearby structures — exclusion zones protect all parties. |
