Lifting Precast Concrete Elements
Precast concrete elements including beams, columns, floor slabs, and wall panels are heavy, awkward, and often have high centres of gravity. Lifting and placing these elements requires detailed planning, correct rigging, and precise coordination between the crane operator and the erection team. This talk covers the hazards specific to precast lifting and the controls that ensure safe placement on site.
Key Hazards
Dropped precast element due to incorrect rigging or lifting point failure
Workers crushed between the precast unit and the receiving structure during placement
Precast element overturning after placement before temporary propping is secured
Crane overloaded when the actual element weight exceeds the estimated lift weight
Control Measures
- Verify the weight of each precast element from the manufacturer's data before preparing the lift plan.
- Use only the designated cast-in lifting points or approved lifting anchors specified by the manufacturer.
- Attach tag lines to control the element's orientation and prevent uncontrolled rotation during the lift.
- Establish exclusion zones beneath the lift and at the landing area before the crane commences the lift.
- Install temporary propping or bracing to stabilise the element immediately after it is placed in position.
- Brief the erection team on the lift sequence, landing positions, and propping requirements each morning.
- Ensure the slinger and signaller maintain clear communication with the crane operator throughout the lift.
- Check that all lifting accessories match the element weight and the sling angle being used.
- Do not release the crane hook until the element is confirmed stable on its temporary supports.

- Tag lines must be attached to control element orientation and prevent rotation during the lift
- Install temporary propping immediately after placing each element before releasing the crane hook
