Lone Working at Night on Site

TBT-LON-019

Lone working at night combines two of the highest risk activities on construction sites. Reduced visibility, limited access to help, and the psychological effects of isolation significantly increase the danger. This talk covers the specific controls needed to manage the risks of working alone during night hours on UK construction sites.

Key Hazards
Delayed emergency response if a lone worker is injured at night
Increased risk of slips trips and falls in poorly lit areas
Personal safety threats from intruders or trespassers on site
Fatigue-related errors due to disrupted sleep patterns
Control Measures
  • Carry out a specific risk assessment for each lone night working task before it begins.
  • Issue a lone worker device with GPS tracking and automatic man-down alert capability.
  • Establish a check-in schedule with a nominated contact at agreed intervals, typically every 30 minutes.
  • Ensure adequate lighting is provided at the specific work area and along access routes.
  • Provide the lone worker with a fully charged mobile phone and two-way radio as backup.
  • Brief the lone worker on emergency procedures including the location of first aid and fire points.
  • Restrict high-risk activities such as working at height and confined space entry from lone night work.
  • Confirm the lone worker is fit for night duty and not suffering from fatigue.
  • Ensure site security patrols are aware of the lone worker's location and task.
Remember
  • Every lone night working task requires a specific written risk assessment
  • Carry a lone worker device with GPS and man-down alert at all times
  • Check in with your nominated contact at the agreed intervals without fail
  • High-risk activities must not be carried out alone at night under any circumstances
  • Report immediately if lighting fails or you feel unsafe for any reason
  • Site security must know your location and planned activities throughout the shift
