What?

  • Multi-lock hasps allow multiple workers to apply their own personal padlocks to a single isolation point simultaneously.
  • Each worker applies their own lock — the equipment cannot be restarted until every individual lock has been removed.
  • This ensures that no single person can re-energise the equipment while any other worker is still working on it.
  • Group isolation is used when multiple people work on the same equipment during maintenance, modification, or commissioning.
  • The isolation sequence must be completed and verified before any lock is applied to the multi-lock hasp.
  • Each lock must be individually identifiable — typically by colour, number, or the worker's name tag attached.
  • Only the person who applied a lock may remove it — transferring lock removal authority to another person is prohibited.
  • A group isolation log records who has applied locks, when they were applied, and when each is removed.
  • The last person to remove their lock must verify the area is clear before the equipment is re-energised.
  • Multi-lock hasps must be large enough to accommodate all the locks required for the maximum number of workers.

Why?

Individual protectionEach worker's lock guarantees the isolation remains in place while they are working — no one can override their personal protection.
Last lock safetyThe equipment cannot restart until every lock is removed — this prevents premature re-energisation while anyone is still at risk.
Prohibited transferOnly you can remove your lock — if someone else could remove it, your personal protection is compromised.
Do Don't
  • Apply your own personal padlock to the multi-lock hasp before starting work.
  • Use a uniquely identifiable lock with your name or number clearly visible.
  • Verify the isolation is complete and effective before applying your lock.
  • Record your name, lock number, and time in the group isolation log.
  • Remove your lock only when your work is complete and the area is confirmed safe.
  • Verify the area is clear of all personnel before removing the final lock.
  • Use a hasp large enough to accommodate all locks needed for the work team.
  • Brief all workers on the group isolation procedure before applying locks.
  • Keep your lock key on your person at all times during the isolation period.
  • Follow the site-specific LOTO procedure for group isolation on each item.
  • DON'T work on isolated equipment without applying your own personal lock first.
  • DON'T use unmarked or unidentifiable locks on the multi-lock hasp.
  • DON'T apply your lock before the isolation is confirmed complete and verified.
  • DON'T skip signing the group isolation log when applying or removing your lock.
  • DON'T remove your lock until your work is finished and the area is safe.
  • DON'T re-energise the equipment until every lock has been removed from the hasp.
  • DON'T use a hasp that cannot accommodate all the locks required for the team.
  • DON'T allow anyone to start without understanding the group isolation procedure.
  • DON'T leave your lock key unattended or give it to another person.
  • DON'T allow anyone else to remove your lock under any circumstances.
