What?
- Bags of cement and aggregate are among the most frequently handled heavy items on UK construction sites.
- A standard bag of cement weighs 25kg — reduced from the historic 50kg to lower the risk of manual handling injuries.
- Aggregate bags (bulk bags or tonne bags) weigh approximately 850kg to 1000kg and require mechanical lifting equipment.
- Lifting 25kg cement bags repeatedly throughout a shift causes cumulative back, shoulder, and knee injuries.
- Correct lifting technique — bend your knees, keep the load close, and lift with your legs — reduces but does not eliminate injury risk.
- Mechanical aids including pallet trucks, sack barrows, and conveyor systems reduce the number of manual lifts required.
- Cement dust from torn bags and during emptying is an irritant and contains chrome VI — RPE and gloves are required.
- Bulk bag lifting requires a rated crane hook or telehandler with the correct lifting attachment and secure bag loops.
- Bags must be stored on pallets in stable stacks, protected from rain — wet cement bags set solid and become unusable.
- Team lifting of individual bags reduces the load per person but requires coordination to prevent sudden load transfer.
Why?
| Cumulative damage | Lifting 25kg bags hundreds of times per day causes the chronic back injuries that force workers out of the industry. |
| Bulk bag failure | A tonne bag with damaged loops dropped from a crane or telehandler crushes anyone beneath it instantly. |
| Cement dust | Tearing and emptying cement bags releases irritant dust and chrome VI — respiratory and skin protection is mandatory. |
