What?
- Cable drums range from small 25kg reels to large wooden or steel drums weighing several tonnes.
- Uncontrolled drum rolling on slopes or uneven ground crushes workers and damages property.
- Large drums require forklift, crane, or drum trailer handling; manual rolling is extremely hazardous.
- Drums must be stored upright on level ground with chocks or cradles to prevent rolling.
- The axle hole must be used for lifting with a suitable bar or spindle rated for the drum weight.
- Fingers and hands are crushed between the drum flange and ground during manual rolling attempts.
- Cable drum jacks raise the drum for cable pulling; they must be on firm, level ground.
- Removing cable from the drum creates a spinning motion hazard if the brake is not applied.
- The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 require mechanical aids for heavy drum handling.
- Drum weight is marked on the flange; always check before selecting the handling method.
Why?
| Crush injuries | Uncontrolled cable drums rolling over workers cause fatal crush injuries to legs, pelvis, and torso. |
| Hand injuries | Hands and fingers are crushed between drum flanges and the ground during manual rolling and positioning. |
| Weight underestimation | Cable drums are deceptively heavy. Workers attempt to manually handle drums that far exceed safe limits. |
