What?
- Gas boiler installation involves handling heavy appliances, connecting gas and water supplies, and flue systems.
- Only Gas Safe registered engineers may install, commission, or work on gas boilers in the UK.
- Incorrect gas connections cause gas leaks that lead to explosions, carbon monoxide poisoning, and death.
- Carbon monoxide from faulty or incorrectly installed boilers kills approximately 30 people per year in the UK.
- Boilers weigh 30 to 50 kilograms and are typically wall-mounted, requiring safe lifting and secure fixing.
- Flue termination positions must comply with Building Regulations to prevent exhaust re-entering the building.
- The gas supply must be tested for soundness (tightness test) before commissioning the boiler.
- Electrical connections to the boiler require safe isolation and competent electrical installation.
- The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 govern all gas appliance installations in the UK.
- A commissioning certificate and benchmark log must be completed and given to the customer after installation.
Why?
| Prevent gas explosions | Incorrect gas connections and leaking joints cause gas accumulation and explosions that destroy buildings and kill occupants. |
| Carbon monoxide deaths | Incorrectly installed flues and boilers produce lethal carbon monoxide that kills silently in occupied buildings. |
| Legal requirement | The Gas Safety Regulations 1998 make it a criminal offence for unregistered persons to work on gas appliances. |
