Communication Protocols at Night
Night working on construction sites creates communication challenges that do not exist during daylight hours. Reduced visibility, smaller crews, fatigue, and limited supervision all increase the risk of miscommunication and error. Reliable communication protocols are essential for coordinating tasks, maintaining safety, and ensuring an effective emergency response after dark. This talk covers the communication methods and rules for night working.

Control Measures
- Issue two-way radios to all key personnel and check they are fully charged before each night shift.
- Establish a communication check-in schedule with all work teams at regular intervals throughout the shift.
- Agree standard radio protocols including call signs, channel numbers, and emergency keywords.
- Ensure a dedicated channel is available for emergency communications separate from routine traffic.
- Brief all operatives on the communication plan, emergency contacts, and reporting procedures at shift start.
- Use illuminated signage and hand signals where verbal communication is not possible due to noise.
- Carry a backup mobile phone with the supervisor's number stored in case of radio failure.
- Record all safety-critical communications in the night shift log for handover to the day team.
