Night Concrete Pour Safety

TBT-NIG-020

Night concrete pours are carried out to meet programme requirements, avoid traffic disruption, or take advantage of cooler curing conditions. Working with wet concrete in darkness adds significant risks from poor visibility, fatigue, and the noise of pump and vibrator equipment. This talk covers the additional controls needed for night-time concrete operations on UK construction sites.

Key Hazards
Concrete burns unnoticed in poor lighting conditions at night
Falls into formwork or excavations obscured by darkness
Fatigue-related errors during long night shift concrete operations
Delivery vehicles reversing in darkness striking pedestrians on site
Control Measures
  • Provide task-specific lighting at the pour area, pump position, and all pedestrian access routes.
  • Ensure banksmen with illuminated wands guide all concrete delivery vehicles on site at night.
  • Wear waterproof gloves, safety glasses, and long sleeves to prevent unnoticed concrete burns.
  • Brief the pour team on the formwork layout, pour sequence, and emergency procedures before dark.
  • Rotate operatives on vibrator duty to manage both HAVS exposure and fatigue during the night shift.
  • Ensure barriers and edge protection around all formwork, excavations, and level changes are visible.
  • Attach retroreflective tape or lights to barriers, edge protection, and key hazard locations.
  • Confirm that the night shift supervisor holds current first aid and concrete pour competency.
  • Provide hot drinks and warm welfare facilities for rest breaks throughout the night pour.
Remember
  • Provide task-specific lighting at the pour area, pump, and all access routes before dark
  • Wear waterproof gloves and long sleeves to prevent concrete burns that go unnoticed at night
  • Ensure all barriers, edge protection, and hazards are visible with retroreflective marking
  • Rotate vibrator operators to manage both HAVS exposure and fatigue during the shift
  • Brief the full pour team on the sequence and emergency procedures before darkness falls
