Musculoskeletal Disorder Prevention

TBT-OCC-025

Musculoskeletal disorders are the most common cause of long-term sickness absence in the UK construction industry. Back pain, shoulder injuries, and repetitive strain affect thousands of workers each year. These conditions develop gradually from repeated heavy lifting, awkward postures, and vibration exposure. Early recognition and prevention can protect your ability to work throughout your career. This talk covers practical steps to prevent musculoskeletal injuries on site.

Key Hazards
Chronic lower back pain from repeated heavy lifting and bending
Shoulder and rotator cuff injuries from sustained overhead work
Knee disorders from prolonged kneeling on hard surfaces
Hand and wrist strain from repetitive gripping and twisting tasks
Control Measures
  • Use mechanical handling aids for all loads that are too heavy or awkward for safe manual lifting.
  • Rotate between different tasks throughout the day to avoid prolonged repetitive movements.
  • Use correct lifting technique: bend the knees, keep the back straight, and hold the load close.
  • Wear knee pads when any task requires kneeling on hard surfaces for extended periods.
  • Take regular short breaks to stretch and relieve strain during physically demanding tasks.
  • Report any persistent aches, pains, or numbness to your supervisor for occupational health referral.
  • Use anti-vibration gloves and limit time on vibrating tools to prevent hand-arm disorders.
  • Plan work to minimise overhead reaching and sustained awkward postures wherever possible.
  • Attend manual handling training and apply the techniques in every lifting task on site.
Remember
  • Use mechanical aids for heavy or awkward loads to protect your back and joints
  • Rotate tasks throughout the day to avoid prolonged repetitive movements on one body area
  • Report any persistent aches, pains, or numbness early for occupational health assessment
  • Wear knee pads whenever kneeling on hard surfaces for any extended period
  • Take regular short breaks to stretch and relieve physical strain during demanding work
