Piling Safety Awareness Overview
Piling operations involve heavy plant, deep excavations, high noise levels, and significant ground vibration. Piling rigs are large, powerful machines with substantial exclusion zone requirements. Striking buried services during piling, contact with the rig mast and overhead lines, and manual handling of heavy steel reinforcement are all common hazards. Everyone working on or near a piling operation must understand the specific risks and maintain strict discipline around exclusion zones.

Crushing from piling rig movement and suspended auger or hammer components
Striking buried services during pile installation causing electrocution or gas release
Excessive noise and vibration exposure from driven and bored piling operations
Manual handling injuries from heavy reinforcement cages and pile casings
Control Measures
- Establish and maintain exclusion zones around the piling rig during all operations.
- Locate all buried services before piling begins using service plans, CAT, Genny, and trial holes.
- Ensure only trained and competent operators are permitted to control the piling rig.
- Provide hearing protection for all workers within the noise hazard zone during piling.
- Use mechanical lifting for reinforcement cages and heavy pile components wherever possible.
- Monitor vibration levels to protect nearby structures and comply with permitted limits.
- Ensure the piling platform is designed and constructed to support the rig safely.
- Brief all site personnel on the piling schedule, exclusion zones, and emergency procedures.
- Inspect the piling rig at the start of each shift and report any defects before operation begins.

- Piling rigs are among the largest and most powerful machines on a construction site.
- Exclusion zones around the rig must be respected at all times during piling operations.
- Buried services can be deeper than expected — always scan and verify before installing piles.
- Noise from piling can exceed safe levels very quickly and hearing protection is mandatory.
- The piling platform must be designed by a competent engineer and checked before the rig arrives.
- Never approach a piling rig without making eye contact with the operator and receiving a signal.
