What?
- Pipe cutting on construction sites involves cutting steel, ductile iron, HDPE, concrete, clay, and PVC pipes to required lengths.
- Cutting methods include disc cutters, reciprocating saws, pipe cutters, chain cutters, and oxy-fuel cutting for steel.
- Silica dust from cutting concrete and clay pipes, and metal fumes from cutting steel, require respiratory protection and extraction.
- Noise from pipe cutting operations frequently exceeds daily exposure limits within minutes — hearing protection is mandatory.
- Sharp cut edges on freshly cut pipes cause deep lacerations — deburring and chamfering after cutting reduces this hazard.
- Pipe cutting with disc cutters requires a hot works permit when sparks are produced near combustible materials.
- Securing the pipe before cutting prevents movement that causes the disc to bind, creating kickback and loss of control.
- Eye protection is essential during all pipe cutting operations — fragments, sparks, and dust are projected at high speed.
- HDPE pipe cutting with hand saws or guillotine cutters avoids the heat generation that damages the pipe material.
- Waste pipe offcuts must be cleared to prevent trip hazards in the trench and around the work area.
Why?
| Dust and fumes | Cutting concrete pipes generates silica dust; cutting steel generates metal fume — both cause serious lung disease without protection. |
| Kickback | A disc cutter binding in the cut throws the tool violently — securing the pipe and correct technique prevent this dangerous reaction. |
| Sharp edges | Freshly cut pipe ends are razor sharp — lacerations to hands and arms occur instantly without gloves and careful handling. |
