Pipe Cutting On Site Safely
Pipe cutting on construction sites uses a variety of methods including disc cutters, reciprocating saws, pipe guillotines, and oxy-fuel torches depending on the pipe material and diameter. Each method generates specific hazards from sparks, dust, noise, and sharp edges. Cutting pipes in trenches adds restricted space and falling object risks. This talk covers the safe pipe cutting methods used on UK construction sites.
Key Hazards
Silica dust from cutting concrete, clay, or fibre cement pipes without suppression
Sparks igniting nearby combustible materials during metal pipe cutting
Hand injuries from gripping unstable pipes during cutting operations
Noise exposure from disc cutters and reciprocating saws during prolonged use
Control Measures
- Select the correct cutting method for the pipe material: disc cutter, guillotine, or saw as appropriate.
- Use water suppression on all disc cutting of concrete, clay, and fibre cement pipe materials.
- Secure the pipe firmly using a pipe vice or cradle before cutting to prevent movement.
- Wear safety glasses, hearing protection, and gloves appropriate for the cutting method.
- Provide RPE when cutting materials that generate respirable dust, especially silica-bearing products.
- Obtain a hot works permit when using oxy-fuel cutting on metal pipes near combustible materials.
- Deburr all cut edges immediately after cutting to prevent laceration during handling.
- Ensure cutting guards are in place on all disc cutters and reciprocating saws before use.
- Brief operatives on the COSHH assessment for the pipe material being cut.
