Pipeline construction and installation involves working in deep trenches, handling heavy pipes, welding and jointing operations, and pressure testing of completed systems. The combination of excavation hazards, manual handling risks, and the potential for pressurised system failures makes pipeline work inherently high-risk. Every operative involved in pipeline work must understand the specific hazards of the materials being used and the safety requirements for installation, testing, and commissioning.
- Ensure all trenches are properly supported or battered before entering for pipe installation.
- Use mechanical lifting equipment to handle and lower pipes into trenches wherever possible.
- Establish exclusion zones around pipe strings and prevent access beneath suspended loads.
- Follow the specific jointing procedure for each pipe material including fusion welding parameters.
- Carry out pressure testing only with trained personnel and clear exclusion zones established.
- Inspect all lifting slings, chains, and accessories before each pipe handling operation.
- Brief all operatives on the pipe material, jointing method, and associated hazards before starting.
- Ensure adequate fire precautions are in place when using fusion welding or hot tapping equipment.
- Record all pressure test results and report any failures to the supervising engineer immediately.
If a pressurised pipe fails during testing, evacuate the exclusion zone immediately. Do not approach the failure point until pressure is confirmed fully released. Call for the test engineer and first aider.
