Dumper Truck Safe Operation

TBT-PLT-035

Dumper trucks transport materials across construction sites and are involved in a significant number of incidents including overturns, pedestrian strikes, and collisions. Forward-tipping dumpers have a high centre of gravity when loaded, making them prone to overturning on slopes, uneven ground, and during tipping operations. Rear-tipping dumpers create crush hazards at the discharge point. Only CPCS or NPORS certified operators may drive dumpers, and seat belts must be worn at all times.

Key Hazards
Dumper overturn on slopes, uneven ground, and during tipping operations
Pedestrians struck by the dumper particularly during reversing movements
Collision with other vehicles, structures, and excavation edges on haul routes
Operator ejection during overturn when the seat belt is not worn
Control Measures
  • Ensure the operator holds a current CPCS or NPORS card for the dumper category.
  • Wear the seat belt at all times while the dumper is in motion or during tipping operations.
  • Complete a pre-use inspection covering brakes, steering, tyres, lights, and seat belt condition.
  • Travel with the skip lowered and the load below the skip sides to maintain a low centre of gravity.
  • Reduce speed on slopes and never attempt to turn a loaded dumper on a steep gradient.
  • Use a banksman for all reversing operations where pedestrians or obstacles are present.
  • Maintain a safe distance from excavation edges and ensure stop blocks are in place at tipping points.
  • Never carry passengers on the dumper unless the machine is specifically equipped with a passenger seat.
  • Report any mechanical defect immediately and do not operate the dumper until it is repaired.
Remember
  • Dumper overturns are a leading cause of fatal plant incidents on UK construction sites.
  • Wearing the seat belt is the single most important thing you can do to survive an overturn.
  • Travel with the skip low and load below the sides to keep the centre of gravity stable.
  • Never turn a loaded dumper on a slope — this is the most common cause of overturn.
  • Stop blocks must be in place at every tipping point to prevent the dumper overrunning the edge.
  • Passengers must never ride on a dumper unless a factory-fitted passenger seat is provided.
