What?

  • A quick hitch allows rapid changing of excavator attachments such as buckets, breakers, and grabs without manual pin removal.
  • Quick hitch failures have caused multiple fatalities in the UK when buckets detached and fell onto workers below.
  • Only fully automatic quick hitches with a secondary locking mechanism are acceptable on UK construction sites.
  • Semi-automatic quick hitches that require the operator to leave the cab to manually insert a safety pin are no longer acceptable.
  • The operator must confirm both the primary and secondary locking mechanisms are fully engaged before lifting any attachment.
  • A visual and physical check from outside the cab must verify the coupler is correctly seated and locked after every change.
  • The attachment weight must not exceed the quick hitch rated capacity — overloading causes structural failure of the coupler.
  • Quick hitches must be inspected daily as part of the excavator pre-use check and included in thorough examinations.
  • All quick hitches must carry a current thorough examination certificate under LOLER 1998.
  • A dropped bucket from a failed quick hitch kills instantly — this single component deserves the highest level of attention.

Why?

Fatal bucket dropA detached excavator bucket weighing over 500kg kills anyone beneath it — fully automatic quick hitches prevent this.
Secondary lockThe secondary locking mechanism is the failsafe — without it, a single pin failure drops the attachment without warning.
Visual confirmationThe operator cannot confirm correct engagement from inside the cab alone — an external check is mandatory after every attachment change.
Do Don't
  • Use only fully automatic quick hitches with a secondary locking mechanism.
  • Confirm both primary and secondary locks are engaged before using the attachment.
  • Carry out a visual and physical check from outside the cab after every change.
  • Verify the attachment weight does not exceed the quick hitch rated capacity.
  • Inspect the quick hitch daily as part of the excavator pre-use check.
  • Ensure the quick hitch has a current LOLER thorough examination certificate.
  • Test the attachment by lifting it slowly and tilting before working near people.
  • Train all operators on the specific quick hitch model fitted to their machine.
  • Replace worn or damaged locking pins, catches, and springs immediately.
  • Maintain an exclusion zone around the excavator when changing attachments.
  • DON'T use semi-automatic quick hitches that require manual pin insertion from outside.
  • DON'T lift or use an attachment without confirming both locks are fully engaged.
  • DON'T skip the external visual check — the cab view cannot confirm correct locking.
  • DON'T exceed the quick hitch rated capacity with oversized or heavy attachments.
  • DON'T operate with a quick hitch that has not been inspected during the pre-use check.
  • DON'T use a quick hitch without a current LOLER thorough examination certificate.
  • DON'T swing a newly attached bucket over people before testing it clear of workers.
  • DON'T operate a quick hitch model you have not been specifically trained to use.
  • DON'T continue using a quick hitch with worn pins, catches, or damaged components.
  • DON'T allow anyone beneath the attachment during the changing and testing process.
