Quick Hitch Safety and Checks

TBT-PLT-049

Quick hitches allow excavator operators to change bucket attachments rapidly without leaving the cab. However, quick hitch failures have caused fatal incidents in the UK when buckets have detached and fallen onto workers. Fully automatic quick hitches with secondary locking mechanisms are now the minimum standard on UK construction sites. This talk explains the checks that must be carried out every time an attachment is changed.

Key Hazards
Bucket detaching from a failed quick hitch and falling onto nearby workers
Secondary locking mechanism not engaging due to dirt, wear, or operator error
Wrong attachment type fitted to an incompatible quick hitch coupler
Visual check missed because the operator did not leave the cab to verify engagement
Control Measures
  • Use only fully automatic quick hitches with a secondary locking mechanism on all excavators.
  • Carry out the manufacturer's connection check procedure every time an attachment is changed.
  • Leave the cab and visually confirm the front and rear pins are fully engaged and locked.
  • Test the connection by curling the bucket hard against the ground before slewing over any person.
  • Ensure the quick hitch is compatible with the specific attachment being fitted — check pin sizes.
  • Inspect the quick hitch daily for wear, damage, hydraulic leaks, and correct operation of the lock.
  • Never allow anyone to stand within the attachment fall zone while changing or testing the connection.
  • Report any quick hitch that does not fully engage or shows signs of wear to the plant manager.
  • Record the attachment change and visual check in the excavator daily log before resuming work.
Remember
  • Use only fully automatic quick hitches with a secondary locking mechanism on all excavators
  • Leave the cab and visually confirm front and rear pins are fully engaged after every change
  • Test the connection by curling the bucket hard against the ground before working near anyone
  • No person may stand within the attachment fall zone during changing or testing the quick hitch
  • Inspect the quick hitch daily for wear, damage, hydraulic leaks, and lock mechanism operation
  • Record every attachment change and visual check in the excavator daily log
