What?

  • Chainsaw PPE is specifically designed to protect against the unique cutting hazards of chainsaw use.
  • Chainsaw trousers or chaps contain multiple layers of cut-retardant fibres that jam the chain on contact.
  • Chainsaw protective boots with steel toecap and cut-resistant upper are mandatory during all chainsaw work.
  • A helmet system combining hard hat, mesh visor, and ear defenders provides head, face, and hearing protection.
  • Chainsaw gloves with cut protection on the left hand protect against the most common contact injuries.
  • All chainsaw PPE must comply with the relevant EN standards and carry CE or UKCA markings.
  • PPE performance degrades after a cut event — any item that has stopped a chain must be replaced immediately.
  • Chainsaw PPE is hot and heavy to wear, increasing fatigue risk during prolonged use.
  • Correct fit is essential — loose trousers can be pulled into the chain; tight ones restrict movement.
  • Chainsaw operators must hold a valid NPTC or equivalent certificate confirming competence.

Why?

Severe lacerationsChainsaws cause devastating injuries in fractions of a second — specialist PPE is the last line of defence.
Chain jammingChainsaw trousers work by releasing fibres that jam the chain — standard workwear provides zero protection.
Legal requirementPUWER 1998 and the PPE Regulations require appropriate chainsaw-specific PPE for all operators.
Do Don't
  • Wear full chainsaw PPE including trousers, boots, helmet, visor, and gloves for every cut
  • Check all PPE carries valid CE or UKCA markings for the relevant EN standard
  • Replace any chainsaw PPE item immediately after it has been struck by the chain
  • Ensure chainsaw trousers fit correctly — snug but allowing full range of movement
  • Inspect all PPE for damage, wear, and fibre exposure before each use
  • Use hearing protection (ear defenders on the helmet) throughout all chainsaw operations
  • Lower the mesh visor before starting the chainsaw and keep it down during cutting
  • Wear chainsaw gloves with cut protection on the left hand as a minimum
  • Take regular rest breaks to manage fatigue from wearing heavy protective clothing
  • Hold a valid NPTC or equivalent chainsaw certificate before operating on site
  • DON'T operate a chainsaw wearing standard work trousers — they provide no chain protection
  • DON'T use chainsaw PPE that has been cut by a chain — it must be replaced immediately
  • DON'T raise the visor during cutting operations — face and eye injuries are serious
  • DON'T wear loose or oversized chainsaw trousers that could be pulled into the chain
  • DON'T remove hearing protection during chainsaw use — noise levels exceed safe limits
  • DON'T wear ordinary safety boots instead of chainsaw-rated boots with cut protection
  • DON'T use damaged or worn chainsaw PPE where fibres are exposed or seams are split
  • DON'T assume arborist PPE is the same as ground-use chainsaw PPE — check the ratings
  • DON'T operate a chainsaw without holding the required competence certificate
  • DON'T skip any item of the chainsaw PPE system — every piece protects a different zone
