Hard Hat Types Standards and Replacement

TBT-PPE-022

Safety helmets are mandatory on most UK construction sites and protect against falling objects, impacts, and electrical contact. There are different types and standards depending on the hazards present. Traditional helmets to BS EN 397 protect against top impacts, while the newer BS EN 12492 climbing-style helmets also protect against side and rear impacts. All helmets have a limited lifespan and must be replaced when damaged, after an impact, or when they reach their expiry date.

Key Hazards
Head injuries from falling objects striking an unprotected or damaged helmet
Reduced protection from helmets that have exceeded their service life or been impacted
Incorrect helmet type selected for the task failing to provide adequate protection
Helmet not worn correctly with chinstrap unfastened allowing it to fall off during incidents
Control Measures
  • Wear your safety helmet at all times in areas designated as mandatory hard hat zones.
  • Inspect your helmet before each use for cracks, dents, UV damage, and deterioration of the harness.
  • Replace your helmet immediately after any impact, even if no visible damage is apparent.
  • Check the date of manufacture inside the shell and replace within the manufacturer's recommended lifespan.
  • Fasten the chinstrap securely to prevent the helmet falling off during a fall or impact event.
  • Select the correct helmet type for the task: climbing-style helmets for work at height or confined spaces.
  • Do not modify your helmet by drilling holes, applying stickers over cracks, or removing internal components.
  • Store your helmet away from direct sunlight, chemicals, and heat which accelerate material degradation.
  • Ensure replacement helmets are the correct size and adjusted to fit your head properly.
Remember
  • Safety helmets must be inspected before every shift and replaced after any impact event.
  • UV exposure degrades helmet materials over time so replace them within the manufacturer's recommended lifespan.
  • Climbing-style helmets to BS EN 12492 provide superior side and rear impact protection.
  • Always fasten the chinstrap because an unfastened helmet will fall off when you need it most.
  • Never modify your helmet by drilling, painting, or applying stickers over damaged areas.
  • A cracked, dented, or discoloured helmet offers reduced or no protection and must be replaced immediately.
