What?
- PPE compatibility means ensuring that wearing multiple items of PPE together does not reduce their individual protection.
- Hard hats can interfere with hearing protection, eye protection, and respiratory equipment if not designed to fit together.
- Tight-fitting RPE face masks do not seal correctly over facial hair, reducing protection factor dramatically.
- Safety glasses may not fit under certain welding helmets or full-face respiratory masks.
- Fall arrest harnesses can restrict access to tool belts, pouches, and chest-mounted gas monitors.
- The Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992 require employers to ensure PPE items are compatible.
- Chemical-resistant gloves may reduce dexterity, making it unsafe to operate certain tools and equipment.
- Hi-vis clothing worn under waterproofs or harnesses may not be visible, reducing its protective function.
- Hearing protection combined with communication radios must allow workers to hear safety warnings.
- PPE selection should consider the full range of equipment a worker needs simultaneously for the task.
Why?
| Maintain protection | Incompatible PPE combinations reduce protection levels, exposing workers to the hazards PPE is meant to prevent. |
| Legal requirement | The PPE at Work Regulations 1992 require employers to ensure all PPE items used together remain effective. |
| Practical safety | Workers who find PPE combinations uncomfortable or impractical may remove items, leaving themselves unprotected. |
