Contaminated Soil Disposal Requirements
Contaminated soil excavated from brownfield or industrial sites must be classified, handled, and disposed of in accordance with environmental legislation. Sending contaminated material to the wrong facility or failing to classify it correctly is a criminal offence. This talk explains the soil classification process, the legal duties for disposal, and the precautions every operative must follow when handling contaminated ground.
- Classify all excavated soil using chemical testing results before it leaves the construction site.
- Segregate contaminated soil from clean material using clearly marked stockpile areas.
- Cover contaminated stockpiles with sheeting to prevent dust and rainwater runoff into drains.
- Ensure contaminated soil is transported only by Environment Agency registered waste carriers.
- Complete waste transfer notes or consignment notes for every load leaving site and retain for three years.
- Wear appropriate PPE including gloves, overalls, and RPE when handling known contaminated soils.
- Brief all operatives on the site contamination plan and the locations of contaminated ground.
- Do not reuse contaminated material on site unless approved by the environmental consultant.
