Cantilever Scaffold Safety
Cantilever scaffolds extend outward from a structure without support from the ground, using beams anchored through or into the building to carry the load. They are used where ground conditions prevent standard scaffolding or where access is needed over obstructions. The design is critical because the entire load is transferred through the anchor points. This talk covers the key hazards and controls specific to cantilever scaffold use.
- Ensure every cantilever scaffold is designed by a competent scaffold engineer for the specific location.
- Check that anchor points are installed in structurally sound material verified by the designer.
- Display the safe working load and do not exceed it under any circumstances during use.
- Install full edge protection on all sides including the outer face and returns at each end.
- Inspect the scaffold including anchor points before first use, every seven days, and after adverse weather.
- Never modify, extend, or remove any part of the cantilever without the designer's written approval.
- Ensure needle beams pass fully through the wall and are properly secured on both the inner and outer face.
- Brief all users on the loading limits and the prohibition on storing materials beyond the working load.
- Record all inspections on the scaffold register with specific checks on anchor beam condition.
- Every cantilever scaffold must be designed by a competent engineer for its specific location
- Anchor points must be in structurally sound material verified by the scaffold designer
- The safe working load must be displayed and never exceeded under any circumstances
- Full edge protection is required on all sides including the outer face and end returns
- Never modify or extend any part of the cantilever without the designer's written approval
- Inspect anchor points specifically at every scheduled inspection and record findings on the register
