What?
- Loading bay scaffolds are purpose-built openings in scaffolding or building facades for material delivery.
- They allow materials to be transferred between ground level and working platforms using hoists or cranes.
- The loading bay must be designed to carry the weight of the materials being transferred plus dynamic loads.
- Gate systems or removable barriers must protect the opening when the bay is not actively being loaded.
- Falls from loading bays are one of the most common scaffold-related fatalities in construction.
- Loading bay gates must be self-closing or positively secured in the closed position when not in use.
- The loading platform must be fully boarded and extend far enough to receive materials safely.
- Material stored on the loading bay must not exceed the scaffold design load capacity.
- Communication between the crane operator, banksman, and scaffold workers is essential during loading.
- The scaffold should have a load notice displayed stating the maximum permitted loading bay capacity.
Why?
| Fall hazard | Open loading bays without gates or barriers are unprotected drops of several metres — falls are frequently fatal. |
| Overloading | Materials placed on loading bays can exceed the scaffold capacity, causing local or total collapse. |
| Struck by loads | Crane loads being swung into loading bays can strike workers standing in or near the bay. |
