Scaffold Handover and Handback Procedures
The scaffold handover is the formal process where the scaffolding contractor confirms the scaffold is complete, compliant with the design, and safe for use by the receiving contractor. The handback is the reverse process when the scaffold is returned for alteration or dismantling. These procedures must be documented and include an inspection confirming the scaffold matches the design specification. Using a scaffold that has not been formally handed over is dangerous and prohibited.
- Complete a formal handover inspection confirming the scaffold matches the approved design drawing.
- Document the handover with signatures from both the scaffolding contractor and the receiving party.
- Issue the scaffold tag showing green status, permitted loading, and the date of handover inspection.
- Brief the receiving contractor's workforce on the scaffold limitations, loading, and prohibited alterations.
- Record any exclusions, incomplete areas, or restrictions on the handover documentation clearly.
- Do not use any scaffold that has not been formally handed over with a current green inspection tag.
- Return the scaffold through a formal handback process before requesting any alterations or dismantling.
- Inspect the scaffold jointly at handback and record any damage caused during the user's occupation.
- Maintain all handover and handback records in the site scaffold register for audit purposes.
- A scaffold must not be used until it has been formally handed over with documented inspection.
- The handover confirms the scaffold matches the design and is safe for the intended loading.
- A green inspection tag must be displayed before anyone steps onto the scaffold platform.
- The user must not alter the scaffold in any way between handover and handback.
- Handback must be formal and documented, with any user-caused damage recorded and repaired.
- All handover and handback records must be kept on site as part of the scaffold management system.
