Scaffold Tie Patterns and Stability

TBT-SCF-026

Scaffold ties anchor the scaffold structure to the building and are critical to preventing collapse. Incorrect tie patterns, missing ties, or poorly installed fixings are among the most common causes of scaffold failure on UK construction sites. This talk explains how tie patterns work, what to look for during inspections, and why operatives must never remove ties without authorisation.

Key Hazards
Complete scaffold collapse due to missing or insufficient ties
Wind loading causing scaffold to pull away from the building
Unauthorised removal of ties during cladding or finishing work
Tie fixings pulling out of weak or deteriorated masonry
Control Measures
  • Ensure scaffold ties are installed in the pattern specified by the scaffold design drawing.
  • Check that every tie is secured to a structurally adequate part of the building.
  • Inspect ties during every scaffold inspection and record findings on the scaffold register.
  • Never remove a scaffold tie without prior approval from the scaffolding contractor.
  • Use reveal ties, through ties, or box ties as appropriate to the building type.
  • Install additional ties where sheeting, netting, or signage increases wind loading.
  • Verify that tie spacing does not exceed the maximum intervals shown on the design.
  • Report any loose, damaged, or missing ties immediately to your supervisor.
  • Ensure returning ties are installed when the original tie location becomes obstructed by work activities.
Remember
  • Scaffold ties prevent the structure from pulling away from the building in wind
  • Ties must follow the exact pattern shown on the scaffold design drawing
  • Never remove or loosen a scaffold tie without the scaffolding contractor's approval
  • Additional ties are required wherever sheeting or netting is fitted to the scaffold
  • Every scaffold inspection must include a check on the condition of all ties
