What?

  • Every subcontractor worker must receive a site-specific induction before they are permitted to work on the construction project.
  • The principal contractor is responsible for ensuring subcontractor inductions are delivered and recorded for every individual.
  • Subcontractor inductions must cover site-specific hazards, emergency procedures, welfare, site rules, and reporting requirements.
  • Subcontractor supervisors must receive an enhanced induction covering their responsibilities for managing their team's safety.
  • Inductions must be delivered in a language and format that every worker can understand, regardless of nationality.
  • Induction records including name, employer, trade, CSCS card details, and date must be maintained on the project file.
  • Refresher inductions are required when significant changes to site hazards, layout, or procedures occur during the project.
  • A brief re-induction may be required for subcontractor workers returning after a prolonged absence from the project.
  • Subcontractor inductions do not replace task-specific method statement briefings for the specific work being undertaken.
  • The quality of the induction directly correlates with accident rates — a thorough induction reduces injuries among new starters.

Why?

First day riskSubcontractor workers are most vulnerable on their first day — they do not know the site hazards without a thorough induction.
Legal complianceCDM 2015 requires the principal contractor to ensure all workers are inducted — failure is a criminal offence.
Language barriersA worker who does not understand the induction cannot follow the rules — delivery must be accessible to all nationalities.
Do Don't
  • Induct every subcontractor worker before they start any work on the project.
  • Cover site-specific hazards, emergency procedures, welfare, and site rules.
  • Provide enhanced inductions for subcontractor supervisors covering their responsibilities.
  • Deliver inductions in languages and formats that every worker can understand.
  • Record name, employer, trade, CSCS card, and induction date for every individual.
  • Re-induct subcontractor workers returning after a prolonged absence from the project.
  • Update induction content when significant site hazards or procedures change.
  • Follow up inductions with task-specific method statement briefings for each activity.
  • Test understanding during the induction — do not just present information passively.
  • Maintain induction records available for inspection by the HSE and client.
  • DON'T allow subcontractor workers on site without completing the site induction first.
  • DON'T omit site-specific hazards from the induction — generic presentations miss real dangers.
  • DON'T treat supervisor inductions the same as operative inductions — supervisors need more.
  • DON'T deliver English-only inductions to a multilingual workforce without support.
  • DON'T let workers start without recording their induction details on the project file.
  • DON'T assume returning workers remember the induction — re-induct after long absences.
  • DON'T use outdated induction material when site conditions have changed significantly.
  • DON'T treat the induction as a substitute for task-specific method statement briefings.
  • DON'T deliver the induction passively — check that every worker understands the content.
  • DON'T lose induction records — they prove every worker was briefed before starting.
