Drone and UAV Survey Safety
Drones are increasingly used on construction sites for topographic surveys, progress photography, structural inspections, and stockpile measurement. Operating a drone on an active construction site brings specific risks from collision with cranes, interference with lifting operations, and the safety of people on the ground below. This talk covers the regulatory requirements and safety controls for drone operations on UK construction sites.
- Ensure the drone pilot holds a valid CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID as a minimum.
- Obtain a specific operational authorisation if flying within restricted areas or near people.
- Coordinate all drone flights with the site manager, crane operators, and lifting supervisors.
- Establish a ground exclusion zone beneath the flight path to protect workers from a falling drone.
- Do not fly drones within 50 metres of any active crane or lifting operation without written approval.
- Check weather conditions including wind speed, rain, and visibility before every flight.
- Maintain visual line of sight with the drone at all times during the flight operation.
- Brief all site operatives on the planned drone flight time and location before the flight begins.
- Carry out a pre-flight checklist including battery charge, propeller condition, and GPS signal strength.
