What?

  • Temporary bridges and platforms provide access across excavations, watercourses, and voids.
  • They are classified as temporary works and must be designed, checked, and approved before use.
  • The temporary works coordinator must be involved in the design check and approval process.
  • Loading capacity must be clearly displayed — vehicle and pedestrian loads must not be exceeded.
  • Edge protection is required on all temporary bridges and platforms used at height or over water.
  • Foundations and bearings must be adequate for the loads and ground conditions present.
  • Regular inspections must be recorded, particularly after heavy rain, frost, or high winds.
  • Materials must be suitable for the environment — timber may rot and steel may corrode over time.
  • Temporary bridges carrying vehicles need approach ramps, wheel guides, and speed restrictions.
  • Removal of temporary bridges and platforms must also be planned as a temporary works activity.

Why?

Collapse preventionAn overloaded or poorly designed temporary bridge can collapse, causing fatal falls or crushing injuries.
Legal requirementCDM 2015 and BS 5975 require temporary works to be designed, checked, and managed by competent persons.
Access safetySafe temporary crossings prevent workers from using dangerous informal routes across hazards.
Do Don't
  • Ensure temporary bridges are designed and approved through the temporary works process
  • Display the maximum load capacity and any vehicle restrictions clearly
  • Install edge protection including guardrails and toeboards on all open sides
  • Inspect the structure regularly and after any significant weather event
  • Check foundations and bearings remain stable and adequately supported
  • Brief all users on load limits, speed restrictions, and pedestrian rules
  • Record all inspections in the temporary works register on site
  • Use non-slip surfaces on walkways and approach ramps
  • Plan removal of the structure as a temporary works activity with a method statement
  • Report any damage, deflection, or unusual movement immediately to the supervisor
  • DON'T use a temporary bridge before it has been formally approved and handed over
  • DON'T exceed the stated load capacity for vehicles or stored materials
  • DON'T remove or modify edge protection without authorisation
  • DON'T skip inspections — deterioration can occur quickly in wet weather
  • DON'T drive across at speed — observe posted speed limits and wheel guides
  • DON'T store materials on temporary bridges unless the design allows for it
  • DON'T alter the structure or supports without approval from the designer
  • DON'T use temporary bridges in flood conditions unless specifically designed for it
  • DON'T allow vehicles and pedestrians to cross at the same time if width is restricted
  • DON'T dismantle temporary bridges without a method statement and permit
