What?
- The Temporary Works Coordinator (TWC) manages all temporary works on a project.
- Every project with temporary works must have a named TWC appointed by the principal contractor.
- The TWC ensures temporary works are designed, checked, approved, installed, and removed safely.
- BS 5975 sets out requirements for temporary works procedures including the TWC role.
- The TWC maintains the temporary works register listing all items on the project.
- No temporary works may be loaded, altered, or removed without the TWC's formal approval.
- The TWC must be competent — trained, experienced, and have sufficient authority.
- Common temporary works include formwork, falsework, propping, shoring, and crane bases.
- The TWC coordinates between the designer and the site installation team.
- Failure to follow BS 5975 procedure has contributed to structural collapses.
Why?
| Prevent collapse | Uncontrolled temporary works are a major cause of structural collapse. |
| Formal control | The TWC ensures every item is designed, checked, and approved. |
| Legal compliance | CDM 2015 and BS 5975 require a managed procedure on all projects. |
| Coordination | The TWC links designers, checkers, and site teams to prevent failures. |
