What?
- Demolition operatives carry out the physical dismantling of structures under controlled conditions.
- The work is classified as high-risk under CDM 2015 and requires specific competence and qualifications.
- Demolition operatives should hold a CSCS Demolition card and appropriate NVQ qualifications.
- Hazards include structural collapse, falls from height, asbestos, dust, noise, and falling debris.
- Operatives must understand the demolition method statement and follow the approved sequence precisely.
- Pre-demolition surveys identify asbestos, structural weaknesses, and live services before work starts.
- Hand demolition using breakers and saws is physically demanding with high vibration and dust exposure.
- Exclusion zones protect operatives and others from uncontrolled falls of material during demolition.
- The demolition supervisor must be present on site and in control of the operation at all times.
- Reporting structural changes, unexpected findings, or concerns is a critical part of the operative's role.
Why?
| Prevent fatalities | Structural collapse and falling materials are leading causes of death in demolition — the method statement saves lives. |
| Health protection | Asbestos, silica dust, noise, and vibration cause serious long-term health conditions in demolition workers. |
| Legal compliance | CDM 2015 and BS 6187 require demolition to be planned, managed, and carried out by competent persons. |
