General Operative (Civils) Safety Duties

TBT-TRD-006

General operatives on civil engineering sites carry out a wide range of tasks including excavation support, concrete placing, drainage installation, kerb laying, and general labouring. The variety of work means general operatives are exposed to the full range of site hazards every day. Understanding your basic safety duties, following the method statement for each task, wearing the correct PPE, and reporting hazards promptly are the foundations of safe working for every general operative on a civils project.

Key Hazards
Manual handling injuries from heavy materials including kerbs, pipes, and concrete
Struck by plant or vehicles when working in close proximity to moving machinery
Trench collapse when assisting in excavation work without adequate support systems
Exposure to cement, dust, and noise during multiple different tasks throughout the day
Control Measures
  • Follow the method statement and risk assessment for every task you are assigned to carry out.
  • Wear all mandatory site PPE and any additional task-specific PPE required for the activity.
  • Maintain awareness of plant movements around you and stay within designated pedestrian zones.
  • Never enter an unsupported excavation regardless of how quickly the task is expected to take.
  • Use correct manual handling techniques and mechanical aids for heavy and awkward materials.
  • Report any unsafe conditions, damaged equipment, or missing safety measures to your supervisor.
  • Attend all toolbox talks and pre-task briefings and ask questions if you do not understand anything.
  • Keep your work area tidy and dispose of waste in the correct skips throughout the day.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly before eating, drinking, or smoking to prevent ingesting harmful substances.
Remember
  • General operatives face the widest range of hazards because they work across many different tasks.
  • Follow the method statement for every task — do not assume you know the best way from experience.
  • Stay out of unsupported excavations and away from moving plant at all times.
  • Manual handling is the most common cause of injury — always use aids and correct technique.
  • PPE requirements change with each task so check what is needed before you start each activity.
  • Report anything unsafe immediately because your report could prevent a serious injury to someone.
