What?

  • Low loaders transport heavy plant such as excavators, cranes, and piling rigs between sites.
  • Loading and unloading plant onto a low loader is a high-risk operation involving movement on a slope.
  • The trailer must be on firm level ground with the brakes applied and wheels chocked before loading.
  • Plant drives onto the trailer via ramps — the gradient creates overturning and run-off risk.
  • A trained banksman must guide the plant operator throughout the loading and unloading procedure.
  • Securing the load with chains and ratchet straps rated for the plant weight is a legal requirement.
  • Abnormal load regulations may apply depending on the combined width, height, and weight of the load.
  • Overhead clearance on the route must be checked — raised booms and buckets increase the transport height.
  • The transport weight must not exceed the trailer or vehicle rated capacity and axle limits.
  • Plant must be in transport configuration — bucket down, boom stowed, slew locked — before travel.

Why?

OverturningPlant driving up or down trailer ramps can overturn, crushing the operator or bystanders.
Unsecured loadsPlant that shifts or falls from a low loader during transport causes fatal road traffic incidents.
OverweightExceeding weight limits affects vehicle stability, braking, and bridge load ratings on the route.
Do Don't
  • Position the trailer on firm level ground with brakes applied and wheels chocked
  • Use a trained banksman to guide plant onto and off the trailer throughout
  • Secure the plant with chains and ratchet straps rated for the load weight
  • Stow the boom, lower the bucket, and lock the slew before transport
  • Check the combined weight does not exceed the trailer rated capacity and axle limits
  • Verify overhead clearance on the planned transport route before departure
  • Apply for abnormal load permits where the load exceeds standard dimensions or weight
  • Brief the plant operator on the loading sequence, ramp gradient, and signals
  • Inspect the trailer ramps, deck, and securing points before every loading operation
  • Ensure the driver holds the correct HGV licence and the vehicle has a valid MOT
  • DON'T load or unload plant without a banksman guiding the operator at all times
  • DON'T drive plant onto a trailer positioned on soft, sloping, or unstable ground
  • DON'T transport plant with the boom raised, bucket elevated, or slew unlocked
  • DON'T exceed the rated capacity of the trailer, axles, or securing equipment
  • DON'T use damaged chains, straps, or securing points to hold the load
  • DON'T stand in the line of travel behind plant driving onto or off the trailer
  • DON'T move the trailer until all securing chains and straps are tight and checked
  • DON'T transport abnormal loads without the required permits and escort arrangements
  • DON'T assume the route is suitable — check bridge weights and height restrictions
  • DON'T allow passengers to ride in the cab of plant being transported on the trailer
