What?

  • Water service connections link properties to the water distribution main.
  • The work involves tapping a live water main under pressure, typically 1 to 8 bar.
  • Operatives must be competent and hold appropriate water industry qualifications.
  • The connection must use approved fittings and methods specified by the water company.
  • Excavation near the main requires service detection and hand digging.
  • Contamination of drinking water is a serious public health risk during connection.
  • Hygiene protocols must be strictly followed — fittings and pipe must be disinfected.
  • The Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 set legal requirements.
  • Pressure testing and chlorination must be completed before commissioning.
  • Failed connections cause uncontrolled flooding that can undermine roads.

Why?

Public healthContaminated water supplies cause disease outbreaks affecting communities.
Flooding riskFailed live tapping causes high-pressure water release flooding the area.
Legal complianceWater Fittings Regulations require approved materials and competent installers.
Operative safetyPressurised mains create risks of pipe whip and water jet injury.
Do Don't
  • Confirm you hold the correct water industry qualifications before starting.
  • Follow the water company's approved connection method and specification.
  • Locate the existing main using service plans and a CAT and Genny.
  • Hand dig to expose the main within 500mm of its indicated position.
  • Disinfect all pipe and fittings before installation to prevent contamination.
  • Pressure test the new service pipe before making the final connection.
  • Chlorinate and flush the service pipe before putting it into supply.
  • Support the excavation around the main to prevent collapse during tapping.
  • Have a plan to manage water release if the connection fails.
  • Record all test results and complete the installation documentation.
  • DON'T tap a live main without the correct competence and qualifications.
  • DON'T use unapproved fittings or pipe materials for service connections.
  • DON'T handle pipe with dirty hands or place them on bare ground.
  • DON'T skip pressure testing before the live connection to the main.
  • DON'T excavate around the main using a mechanical excavator.
  • DON'T leave exposed pipe ends unprotected — cap to prevent contamination.
  • DON'T work on live mains without a plan for uncontrolled water release.
  • DON'T backfill without completing as-built records.
  • DON'T bypass chlorination and flushing before commissioning.
  • DON'T connect without the water company's approval and permit.
