Chemical Dosing Area Safety on Treatment Works

TBT-WWT-024

Water and wastewater treatment works use a range of hazardous chemicals including ferric chloride, sodium hypochlorite, polyelectrolyte, and lime. Chemical dosing areas contain bulk storage tanks, transfer pumps, and dosing lines that can leak, spill, or release toxic fumes. Construction workers entering these areas during upgrades or maintenance must understand the risks and controls in place.

Key Hazards
Chemical burns from skin or eye contact with corrosive dosing chemicals
Toxic fume inhalation from chlorine gas release or chemical reactions
Slips on wet, chemical-contaminated floors around dosing equipment
Uncontrolled chemical mixing from incompatible substances stored together
Control Measures
  • Review the COSHH assessment and safety data sheet for every chemical stored in the dosing area.
  • Wear the PPE specified in the COSHH assessment including chemical goggles, gloves, and coveralls.
  • Check that the emergency eyewash station and safety shower are functional before starting work.
  • Ensure chemical storage areas maintain segregation between incompatible substances.
  • Isolate and drain chemical dosing lines before carrying out any maintenance or construction work.
  • Use spill containment bunds and keep spill kits readily available in the dosing area.
  • Ensure adequate ventilation is maintained or forced ventilation is operating in enclosed dosing rooms.
  • Brief all operatives on the location of emergency showers, eyewash, and escape routes.
  • Report any chemical leak, spill, or unusual smell to the treatment works operator immediately.
Emergency / Rescue

If chemical contact occurs, flush the affected area with clean water for at least 20 minutes using the emergency shower or eyewash. Remove contaminated clothing. Call 999 if burns are severe. Provide the safety data sheet to the paramedics.

Remember
  • Read the COSHH assessment and safety data sheet before entering any chemical dosing area
  • Wear the full PPE specified including chemical goggles, gloves, and protective coveralls
  • Check the emergency eyewash and safety shower are working before you start any task
  • Isolate and drain dosing lines before carrying out maintenance or construction work
  • Report any leak, spill, or unusual chemical smell to the works operator immediately
