Sludge Handling Thickening and Dewatering
Sludge handling, thickening, and dewatering processes at wastewater treatment works involve contact with raw and digested sewage sludge, rotating mechanical equipment, and chemical dosing systems. Workers are exposed to biological pathogens, hydrogen sulphide gas, and the risk of engulfment in sludge hoppers and storage tanks. This talk covers the hazards and controls for safe construction and maintenance work in sludge processing areas.
Key Hazards
Biological infection from contact with raw or digested sewage sludge
Hydrogen sulphide gas release during sludge agitation and transfer
Engulfment in sludge hoppers, thickeners, or storage tanks during entry
Entanglement with rotating dewatering equipment such as belt presses and centrifuges
Control Measures
- Treat all sludge handling areas as biologically hazardous and wear waterproof PPE at all times.
- Monitor the atmosphere for H2S in enclosed sludge processing areas before and during work.
- Isolate and lock out all rotating equipment including belt presses and centrifuges before access.
- Obtain a confined space entry permit before entering any sludge tank, hopper, or thickener vessel.
- Cover all cuts and wounds with waterproof dressings and ensure hepatitis A vaccination is current.
- Wash hands with antibacterial soap before eating, drinking, or smoking after leaving the area.
- Ensure forced ventilation is running in enclosed sludge processing buildings during all work.
- Use non-spark tools in areas where methane or biogas accumulation is possible.
- Brief all operatives on the pathogen risks and hygiene requirements before starting work.
