Visitor Management and Escort Procedures

TBT-WEL-020

Visitors to construction sites including clients, inspectors, and members of the public are at greater risk because they are unfamiliar with the hazards present. A controlled visitor management process ensures that all visitors are properly inducted, issued with appropriate PPE, and escorted by a competent person at all times. This talk explains the site visitor management procedures and what every operative must know.

Key Hazards
Visitors entering hazardous areas without awareness of the risks present
Visitors without PPE being struck by falling objects or plant movements
Unescorted visitors straying into exclusion zones or active work areas
Visitor vehicles on site creating uncontrolled traffic and pedestrian conflicts
Control Measures
  • Register all visitors at the site office and record their name, organisation, and time of arrival.
  • Provide a visitor safety briefing covering site hazards, rules, emergency procedures, and assembly points.
  • Issue visitors with mandatory PPE including hard hat, high-visibility vest, and safety footwear.
  • Assign a named escort who remains with the visitor at all times during their presence on site.
  • Restrict visitor access to designated safe routes and areas agreed in the visit plan.
  • Ensure visitor vehicles are parked in the designated area and do not enter active work zones.
  • Brief the escort on the planned route, the work activities in progress, and any areas to avoid.
  • Sign visitors out at the site office when they leave and confirm all PPE has been returned.
Remember
  • Every visitor must be registered at the site office before entering the construction area
  • A safety briefing and mandatory PPE must be provided to all visitors before they go on site
  • Visitors must be escorted by a named competent person at all times during their visit
  • Visitor access must be restricted to designated safe routes agreed before the visit begins
  • Visitor vehicles must be parked in the designated area and kept out of active work zones
  • Sign visitors out when they leave and confirm all issued PPE has been returned safely
