Edge Protection Systems and Standards
Edge protection is the primary means of preventing falls from height on construction sites. Where any open edge exists at two metres or above, a suitable edge protection system must be installed before work begins. This talk covers the types of edge protection available, the standards they must meet, and what every operative should check before working near an unprotected edge.
- Ensure collective edge protection is installed before any work at height commences near open edges.
- Check that guard rails are at least 950mm high with a mid-rail and toe board fitted.
- Inspect edge protection daily and after any severe weather or impact event.
- Use proprietary edge protection systems that comply with BS EN 13374 Class A, B, or C as required.
- Secure all fixings and base plates to prevent displacement under load or impact.
- Install toe boards at least 150mm high to prevent materials rolling off the edge.
- Never remove or alter edge protection without permission from your supervisor.
- Report any gaps, damage, or missing components immediately to the site team.
- Erect warning signage at areas where edge protection is being installed or modified.
If someone falls from an unprotected edge, call 999 immediately. Do not move the casualty. Keep them warm and conscious while awaiting emergency services. Secure the area to prevent further falls.
- Edge protection must be in place before any work near an open edge begins
- Guard rails need a top rail, mid-rail, and toe board to be compliant
- Only trained and authorised persons may erect or dismantle edge protection
- Report any damage, gaps, or missing edge protection to your supervisor immediately
- BS EN 13374 classifies edge protection into three classes based on slope angle
- Never lean materials or equipment against guard rail systems on site
