MEWP Pre-Use Inspection Checklist

TBT-WAH-046

A pre-use inspection is the operator's final check before using a mobile elevating work platform. It confirms that all safety-critical systems are functioning correctly and that the machine is safe to operate that day. Skipping or rushing this inspection has contributed to MEWP incidents including entrapment, overturning, and falls. This talk covers what must be checked, how to carry out the inspection, and when to take the machine out of service.

Key Hazards
Machine overturning due to undetected hydraulic leaks or structural damage
Platform collapse from cracked welds or corroded structural members
Operator entrapment from malfunctioning emergency lowering controls
Electrical faults causing unexpected platform movement during use
Control Measures
  • Walk around the machine and inspect for visible damage, leaks, cracked welds, and tyre condition.
  • Check hydraulic hoses, rams, and connections for leaks, chafing, or damage before starting.
  • Test all platform controls including raise, lower, slew, and drive from both the platform and ground.
  • Test the emergency lowering system from the ground station to confirm it operates correctly.
  • Check guardrails, gates, and mid-rails on the platform for security and completeness.
  • Inspect the harness anchorage point on the platform and confirm it is undamaged.
  • Verify outrigger pads and stabilisers are present, undamaged, and correctly stowed for travel.
  • Check that the LOLER thorough examination certificate is current and displayed on the machine.
  • Record the pre-use inspection in the machine log and report any defects to your supervisor.
Remember
  • Complete a full pre-use inspection before operating any MEWP at the start of each shift
  • Test the emergency lowering system from the ground station every day before use
  • Check hydraulic hoses, connections, and rams for leaks or damage as part of every inspection
  • The LOLER thorough examination certificate must be current and displayed on the machine
  • Record the inspection in the machine log and report all defects before operating the MEWP
  • Take the machine out of service immediately if any safety-critical defect is found
