Scissor Lift Safety and Limitations

TBT-WAH-045

Scissor lifts provide stable elevated working platforms for indoor and outdoor tasks where a large working area at height is needed. Unlike boom lifts, scissor lifts can only extend vertically. They are frequently used for ceiling installation, services fit-out, and painting work. The main risks include machine overturn on uneven ground, entrapment between the platform and overhead structures, and falls from the platform. Understanding the limitations of scissor lifts is essential for safe operation.

Key Hazards
Machine overturn when operated on uneven, soft, or sloping ground surfaces
Entrapment between the rising platform and overhead beams or structures
Falls from the platform when leaning over guardrails or working with gates open
Contact with overhead power lines or electrical systems during outdoor use
Control Measures
  • Ensure all operators hold a valid IPAF or equivalent licence for the scissor lift category.
  • Carry out a pre-use inspection including tyres, guardrails, controls, and emergency lowering system.
  • Operate only on firm, level surfaces within the gradient limits specified by the manufacturer.
  • Check overhead clearance before raising the platform to prevent entrapment against structures.
  • Keep all guardrails and gates in the closed and locked position while the platform is raised.
  • Do not exceed the rated platform capacity for combined weight of personnel and materials.
  • Never use ladders, boxes, or any other equipment on the platform to gain additional height.
  • Lower the platform fully before driving the machine to any new position on site.
  • Use outriggers or stabilisers where fitted before raising the platform.
Remember
  • Scissor lifts only travel vertically so you must position the machine directly below the work area.
  • Pre-use inspections must be completed before every shift by the trained operator.
  • Ground conditions are critical — soft, uneven, or sloping ground can cause the machine to overturn.
  • Always check overhead clearance before raising the platform to prevent crushing and entrapment.
  • Never stand on the guardrails, use ladders on the platform, or lean out beyond the platform edge.
  • Lower the platform fully before driving and never drive with the platform in the raised position.
