Stepladder Safe Use and Positioning
Working at Height › Access Equipment › Stepladder Safe Use and Positioning
Stepladders are one of the most commonly misused items of access equipment on construction sites. They should only be used for short-duration, light-duty tasks where a more stable platform is not reasonably practicable. Falls from stepladders cause hundreds of serious injuries every year in the UK. This talk covers when a stepladder is appropriate, how to position it correctly, and the rules for safe use.
Key Hazards
Falls from stepladders due to overreaching or standing on the top step
Stepladder slipping on wet, uneven, or loose surfaces during use
Collapse of defective stepladders with damaged hinges or locking stays
Workers using stepladders for tasks that require a more stable platform
Control Measures
Use a stepladder only for short-duration tasks lasting no more than 30 minutes in one position.
Check the stepladder before each use for damage to stiles, treads, hinges, and locking stays.
Open the stepladder fully and ensure all locking devices are engaged before climbing.
Position the stepladder on a firm, level surface — never on loose material or an uneven floor.
Do not stand on the top two treads or the top cap of any stepladder during use.
Maintain three points of contact with the stepladder at all times while climbing or working.
Do not overreach — keep your belt buckle within the stile width at all times.
Never use a stepladder in windy conditions outdoors or near open edges without protection.
Report and remove from service any stepladder with cracked stiles, bent treads, or faulty locks.
Remember
Stepladders are only suitable for short-duration, light-duty tasks lasting no more than 30 minutes
Check hinges, stiles, treads, and locking stays before every use and reject any defective items
Place stepladders on firm level ground and ensure all locking devices are fully engaged
Never stand on the top two treads or the top cap of any stepladder under any circumstances
Keep your belt buckle within the stile width to avoid overreaching during any task
Maintain three points of contact with the stepladder at all times while climbing or working
